wings

A little while ago we were invited to a pirate party. I knew this would be a problem for one of our crew... Doots is allergic to pirates. She really dislikes the whole aarrrgh scene.

I knew the invitation was on its way and I was interested to see how she would respond to the challenge of dressing up all piratey. She didn't skip a beat.

I'll go as a parrot, she announced. Bless her!

I thought I'd whip her up a little parrot costume. I searched around and came up trumps with these from Christie (you can follow the trail of links to the original source.)

I used soft yellow wool felt for the base and began cutting out all those rows of 'feathers' on the Friday afternoon. Continued through Saturday. Sunday morning, the day of the party - ta da - they were finished and ready to try on. But no, they were apparently 'too heavy'. The wings were unceremoniously dumped into the dress up box.

She went as a cat instead.

I asked her if she wouldn't mind wearing them while I took a few photos. And of course she flapped and soared and tweeted long after the camera had done it's work. Kids!

Oh, and by the way, Oesch was more than happy to be kitted out as a fierce sea-faring rogue. He looked outrageously gorgeous (but I don't have a photo).

I'm really enjoying sewing dress ups and thinking of a construction vest for Oesch next, and perhaps some animal hoods or masks. Do you make dress ups? Got any great ideas for me?

  1. These are eye-poppingly gorgeous Sarah [as is her Holly Hobby inspired dress] and you are an amazing Mum [to the max!].

I admire you even more as I'm can't really sew [reluctant to write not a sewer - as it could be misread!] and if there are any dress ups they are glued, stapled or sticky-taped!

    Happy day Lovely!

  2. Hi Sarah, great story, amazing parrot costume! Very pretty and effective, I love the wings.

Sorry, no pattern ideas from my side. As a kid I dressed up as a mouse, princess, butterfly... may be that helps a little?

Enjoy, I love to see what you come up with!

  3. They look fantastic, well done even if it took a while before she liked them! I LOVE her little peasant dress too, great fabric! My dress up creations begin and end with capes at this stage, the rest comes from Oppies :)

  5. They're awesome!!
When I get my sewing machine back from Mum I might have to make a pair for our dress up box.

  6. What a classic, Sarah. You'll have to show it to me, you crafty minx! Who knows - once you've showed me how to thread my bobbin, I might just have to make something similar for Planet Baby ☺. J x

  7. So glad that she eventually loved the wings after all the work that you did. Very impressive I must say. I have made some fairy stuff in the past with tulle and once added some green Lycra type fabric as the top part of the pink tulle skirt to make a flower costume. I cut the green fabric to look a bit like leaves/petals. Cloaks are always relatively easy to whip up and can be fun dress ups. I see that you made a gorgeous red cloak....my dress up sewing is much more 'put together without a pattern' type of sewing!

  8. Sarah these wings are just beautiful, you did a wonderful job. Ahh little ones can be fickle can't they, maybe they'll be the next favourite dress up outfit when you have a party to go to. I would have love wings like that to dress up in when I was little. xo

  10. Oh Sarah - you are so clever - what a fabulous dress-up
I'm hopeless at this sort of thing - although I did make an octopus costume once that was pretty cool

  11. It seems to be a standard equation: the more effort mum puts in, the faster the rejection. I bet those fun wings will be adored on other days though and your kids will grow up knowing they can make whatever they need with a bit of ingenuity.
